How to Get Nigerian Youths More Involved in Religious Activities
Youths Involved in Religious Activities

Religion has long been a major part of Nigerian society, shaping our values and traditions. However, in recent times, many religious institutions have struggled with dwindling youth participation. As the younger generations are becoming increasingly influenced by technology and social media, religion seems less engaging to them.

In Nigeria, there has been a notable increase in youth-centric churches, such as Harvesters, Celebration Church International, and House on the Rock. However, to sustain growth and continuity, it is crucial to develop better strategies that will effectively involve youth in religious activities. This article explores practical ways to encourage youth participation in religion while making religious institutions more appealing.

But firstly, why are youths less interested in religious participation? It is necessary to understand the decline in youth participation. Several factors contribute to this, some of which are:

  1. Modern Distractions: With the rise of the digital era, the average youth has an online presence and the existence of various entertainments on social media platforms distracts them from anything religious. The constant buzz of notifications and viral trends make it easy to forget the deeper connections that spirituality can offer. All that we can offer as youths is just the ‘God Abeg prayer.’ Without an intentional shift, religion can easily take a backseat to the fleeting distractions of the online world.

  2. Lack of Engagement: In some religious institutions, many leadership positions are occupied by older individuals, making the younger ones feel excluded from decision-making. Also, some conventional practices may not ‘resonate’ with them. When this happens, they become disinterested and withdraw.

  3. Relevance of Teachings: Nowadays, if religious teachings do not address real-life challenges that Nigerian youths relate to, such as career growth, mental health, and social issues, they find it boring and struggle to pay attention.  It’s like trying to watch a reality show without any drama. They just can’t connect, and the next thing you know, they’re scrolling through their phones, looking for something that actually speaks to their lives.

  4. Peer Pressure: The desire for social acceptance, influence of trends, fear of judgment, and competing social activities contribute to this decline, as many young people choose to remain ‘woke.’

Strategies to Increase Youth Participation in Religious Activities

To increase the involvement of young Nigerians in religious activities, religious institutions must adopt innovative, inclusive, and engaging strategies.

  1. Create Youth-Centered Religious Programs

Religious institutions should organise programs to meet the interests and needs of young people. Nigerian youths are interested in fellowships and interactive bible studies where they can freely engage in open discussions, and share real-life applications of scriptures, thereby making religious teachings more relatable. They are also interested in skill acquisition and empowerment programs that provide practical training. For example, training on digital marketing, entrepreneurship, leadership development, etc. All these can exist within religious settings to attract youth participation.

  1. Utilize Technology and Social Media

Nowadays, Nigerian youths spend significant periods online due to work or leisure. Many Pastors, Reverend Fathers, and religious influencers alike have successfully tapped into this and have built a large youth following. Some examples are Pst Femi Lazarus, Emmanuel Iren, Bolaji Idowu, etc. Religious organizations must thus utilize these platforms effectively to catch them. This can be done by:

  • Posting motivational messages, short sermons, interactive Q&A sessions, and faith-based challenges.

  • Broadcasting religious services and teachings on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. An example is NSPPD.

  • Developing apps with daily devotionals, for example, YouVersion which challenges individuals with a 365-day Bible plan.

  1. Encourage Youth Leadership and Participation

Young people are more likely to engage in religious activities when they feel valued and heard. Religious institutions should therefore encourage youths to take leadership positions in various committees, choir groups, outreach programs and the like. They should be allowed to plan and lead these programs as these foster a sense of belonging and serve as an effective way to keep them actively involved.

  1. Make Religious Teachings Relevant to Everyday Life

Religious messages should address contemporary issues that concern young people. By making teachings applicable to real-life situations, religious institutions can create a connection between religion and daily experiences. Such topics span across mental health, career and financial growth, entrepreneurship, love and relationships. All these should be addressed in ways that are practical and relatable, as it will determine if they will return for more wisdom.

  1. Organize Engaging Social and Recreational Activities

Combining religious activities with social events can make religious activities more appealing to young people. Various initiatives can be introduced to create a more interactive and attractive religious environment. These include gospel music concerts, talent shows, sports competitions, volunteer and outreach programs, etc. This can serve as an extension of their faith.

  1. Create a Welcoming Environment

Many young people often feel disconnected from religion due to judgmental attitudes or rigid doctrines. Young people need a space where they feel comfortable expressing themselves. Religious institutions should adopt a non-judgmental approach, encouraging open discussions on sensitive topics such as sexuality, career choices, and social challenges. They can also modernize service formats and music styles, as this draws the youth more.

The declining participation of young Nigerians in religious activities is a challenge that can be addressed through great strategies. By embracing technology, engaging teachings, encouraging youth leadership, and creating a more inclusive environment, religious institutions can rekindle the interest of younger generations in Nigeria.
