Wrong Skincare Mindset for Beginners

Embarking on your skincare journey can be exciting yet overwhelming due to several factors. With lots of products, routines, and advice available on the streets of the internet and from friends, it is super easy to get swept up with the promise of having that flawless skin you have in your imagination.

However, one important factor often overlooked is ‘mindset’. When I decided to take my skincare journey seriously, I had a lot of wrong opinions, and to make matters worse, I hadn’t done any proper research. For instance, I believed I needed many products to get started and even thought sunscreen was unnecessary. In short, my thinking was misguided. Beginning your skincare routine with unrealistic expectations or misinformation will not only hinder your progress but also lead to disappointment, one that may be difficult to accept.

This article addresses several common misconceptions that many beginners should steer clear of when beginning their skincare journey, as well as the appropriate mindset to adopt.

  • That All Skin Types are the Same

No two people’s skin is exactly alike, even if they may share similar concerns. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recognizes five types of skin: oily, dry, normal, combination, and sensitive. Each of these skin types has its unique characteristics and needs. For instance, certain moisturizers may feel too heavy for oily skin but perfect for dry skin. Because all skin types vary, it is wrong to begin your skincare journey and make certain decisions without knowing your skin type and determining what sets of products work for your skin. I was also guilty; I once purchased a product without researching my skin type and later had to stop using it because the end result wasn’t one I was proud of. Thus, you must quit assuming all skin types are the same and understand that knowing your skin type is key  to establishing an effective skincare routine tailored to your needs.

  • That You will See Overnight Results

One of the most common and erroneous attitudes about skincare is the expectation of an overnight transformation. Results do not happen overnight! Many products often promise changes in only a few days. In reality, skincare is a gradual process. For example, if you are treating acne or hyperpigmentation, visible improvements may take weeks to months; therefore, it is not advisable to start your skincare journey with the mindset of stopping at some point when you do not see quick results. Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute states that because it takes 28 days for new skin cells to develop, the benefits are most noticeable after this time. After following your skincare routine consistently for around four months, you ought to observe an improvement in your skin. Instead of relying on your memory, a more effective approach is to track progress by taking regular photos and maintaining a detailed record. Consistency and patience are the key.

  • That if it Worked for Someone, It’ll Work for You

A product that works wonders for a friend or colleague may not magically work the same miracles for you. I mean, individual results can vary. Factors like genetics, lifestyle, diet, and environmental conditions influence how your skin reacts to products. What produces glowing results for one person might cause irritation or no effect at all for another. Instead of mimicking someone else’s routine and products, which can lead to disappointment and wasted resources, prioritize your skin needs and goals, then purchase accordingly. If you must consider a product based on a recommendation from someone else, be sure to do your due diligence by doing some research.

  • The More the Products, the Better the Results

Another common misconception is that you have to overload your routine with multiple products to get better results. While a 10-step skincare routine may work for some, applying too many products can lead to irritation or breakouts for others. In your skincare journey, it is essential to avoid overwhelming your skin with too many products at once. More products do not guarantee better results. Start with a basic routine (cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen) and introduce additional products as you become more familiar with your skin’s needs and preferences. Most importantly, introduce the new products ‘gradually’ to avoid overwhelming your skin, especially since you are new to skincare. This will reduce the likelihood of unpleasant effects.

  • “I’m Nigerian, I do not require a Sunscreen”

Aha! Many Nigerians still believe that our melanin-rich skin doesn’t need sun protection. If you still hold that view in 2025, you dey fall my hand. While our darker skin, enriched with melanin, offers some natural protection by shielding the outer layer from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays, it does not make us completely immune to sun damage. I learned this the hard way last year, following a severe sunburn. Based on a friend’s suggestion, I decided to apply sunscreen, and I haven't looked back. Sunscreen, according to experts, shields our skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sunburn, skin cancer, and premature ageing. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends we use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher for effective protection.

All these mindsets such as believing that all skin types require the same approach or expecting instant results, must be set aside before beginning your skincare journey. The misconceptions about skincare seem endless, especially with the overwhelming number of opinions online. However, it’s crucial to rely on credible sources, understand your skin, and approach your skincare journey with a positive and realistic mindset.
