Back story >>>
Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, a 23 year old model was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father of igbo descent and Mozambican mother. Her background came under scrutiny when she embarked on the 2024 Miss South Africa pageantry. The scrutiny came after questions were raised concerning her nationality and eligibility and this made the South African Department of Home Affairs step into the picture to conduct a thorough investigation which revealed some discrepancies in Chidinma's mother's background. It was further revealed that her mother may have stolen another person's identity, making Chidinma a non-South African. Subsequently, due to xenophobic attacks from South Africans and threats to her well being and her family's, Chidinma announced her withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageantry.
However, the whole situation and how it unfolded generated a lot of reactions from netizens and Nigerians especially clapped their support for her. After her withdrawal, being a dual citizen of Nigeria, Chidinma was invited by the Miss Universe Nigeria to represent Nigeria in the contest, she contested representing Taraba state and was crowned the winner at the Eko hotels and suits, Victoria Island, Lagos, while beating 24 other contestants down.
Her victory won her the opportunity to represent Nigeria in the Miss Universe pageantry to be held in Mexico. Moreover, Chidinma, after announcing her arrival at Mexico for the contest, was faced with an announcement from the South African government to the public, stating that Chidinma would be stripped of her South African citizenship as well as documents, hours after the announcement, a petition was filed by South Africans to halt Chidinma's participation in the contest, stating explicitly the Progressive Forces writes- ‘ As Progressive Forces of South Africa, we are writing this letter on behalf of everyone who stands for justice to plead with you Miss Universe as an organization to reconsider the contestant Miss Nigeria Universe and, if possible, to cancel her entry” The intention was clearly stated, Chidimma must be expelled from the pageantry!
Should Chidinma be actually held responsible for her mother's actions, or is the South African government and its people just being dramatic?
