In a significant development, the United States District Court for the Northern District, presided over by Judge Jeffrey Gilbert, has postponed its ruling in a subpoena application concerning Nigeria's president, Bola Tinubu. This decision comes after Chicago State University (CSU) confirmed that the college transcript submitted by Tinubu, used for admission in 1977, indicated a female gender.

Initially scheduled to rule on September 12, Judge Gilbert felt the need for additional time to consider his decision after learning about the existence of a separate court subpoena that yielded a CSU transcript bearing the name Bola A. Tinubu assigned to a female. Tinubu's attorney, Christopher Carmichael, dismissed the gender issue, likening it to a frivolous conspiracy theory propagated by Tinubu's political opponents, reminiscent of Donald Trump's claims about Barack Obama's birthplace in 2010.

However, Atiku Abubakar's legal representative, Alexandre de Gramont, swiftly informed the court that the university records themselves revealed the possibility of Bola Tinubu, who also attended CSU in the 1970s, being a woman. The records were submitted to Nigerian civil rights lawyer Mike Enahoro-Ebah in mid-2022, complying with a state court subpoena. The submitted documents showed that Bola A. Tinubu gained admission to CSU in 1977 based on a transcript from Southwest College Chicago that bore the gender marker of female.

Judge Gilbert became perplexed when CSU lawyer Michael Hayes confirmed that records had been turned over to Enahoro-Ebah in 2022, but insisted that it was indeed the Nigerian president, Tinubu, who attended and graduated from the university. Hayes, however, could not explain the discrepancies, and the university administrators were unable to affirm under oath the authenticity or falsity of the certificate Tinubu has presented as evidence of his education.

Consequently, due to the confusion caused by the contradictory evidence, Judge Gilbert declared that he would require more time to process the situation. He stated that his court would notify all parties involved about a new judgment or hearing date, adding that additional documents or clarifications might be necessary from the concerned parties.
